What Is Depreciation and How Do You Calculate It?

The GDS recovery periods for property not listed above can be found in Appendix B, Table of Class Lives and Recovery Periods. Residential rental property and nonresidential real property are defined earlier under Which Property Class Applies Under GDS. You can take a special depreciation allowance to recover part of the cost of qualified property (defined next) placed in service during the tax year. You figure this by subtracting the first year’s depreciation ($250) from the basis of the computer ($5,000). Your depreciation deduction for the second year is $1,900 ($4,750 × 0.40).
