MA\u00d1JUSHR\u012aMITRA (\u2019Jam dPal bShes gNyen) was born in a brahman family in the city of Dvikrama to the west of Bodhgay\u0101 in India. His father was S\u0101dhush\u0101str\u012b, and his mother was Prad\u012bp\u0101lok\u0101. He became a scholar of al the five scholarly fields.<\/p>\n

In a pure vision, Ma\u00f1jushr\u012b gave him this prophetic advice: \u201cO son of good family, if you want to attain the result of Buddhahood in this very life, go to the Sh\u012btavana charnel ground.\u201d Ma\u00f1jushr\u012bmitra went there and received teachings from Prahevajra for seventy-five years. Prahevajra told him:<\/p>\n

The nature of the mind is Buddha from the beginning.
\nMind, like space, has no birth or cessation.
\nHaving perfectly realized the meaning of the oneness of al phenomena,
\nto remain in it, without seeking, is the meditation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Ma\u00f1jushr\u012bmitra realized the meaning of Prahevajra\u2019s teaching and expressed his realization to him:<\/p>\n

I am Ma\u00f1jushr\u012bmitra.
\nI have attained the accomplishment of Yam\u0101ntaka.
\nI have realized the great equalness of sa\u1e43s\u0101ra and nirv\u0101\u1e47a.
\nAll-knowing primordial wisdom is arisen in me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When Prahevajra attained nirv\u0101\u1e47a in the midst of wondrous signs, Ma\u00f1jushr\u012bmitra beheld Prahevajra in the sky in the midst of a mass of light, and he uttered this lament:<\/p>\n

Alas, alack, alas! O Vast Expanse!
\nIf the light of the teacher\u2019s lamp is obscured,
\nWho wil dispel the darkness of the world?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From the mass of light with the sound of a thunderclap came a golden casket the size of a thumbnail. In the air the casket circumambulated Ma\u00f1jushr\u012bmitra thrice. Then it descended into the palm of his right hand. Upon opening it, he found the testament of Prahevajra, Three Words That Penetrate the Essence, written in blue malachite liquid on a leaf made of five precious substances. Just by seeing it he attained a realization equal to that of Prahevajra. Then Ma\u00f1jushr\u012bmitra classified the 6,400,000 verses of Dzogpa Chenpo into three categories (sDe):<\/p>\n

1. The teachings that emphasize the way the mind \u201cdwel s\u201d he categorized as Semde<\/p>\n

2. The teachings that emphasize freedom from efforts he categorized as Longde<\/p>\n

3. The teachings that emphasize the essential points he categorized as Me-ngagde<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ma\u00f1jushr\u012bmitra divided Nyingthig, the most extraordinary teachings of Me-ngagde into two groups:<\/p>\n

1. The teachings of the oral transmission (sNyan rGyud)<\/p>\n

2. The expository tantras (bShad rGyud)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He noted down in writing the teachings of the oral transmission. But for the expository tantras, he found no worthy disciple to whom he could pass them on, so he concealed them in a boulder marked with a crossed dorje (vajra) to the northeast of Bodhgay\u0101.<\/p>\n

He spent one hundred and nine years at the Sosadv\u012bpa charnel ground west of Bodhgay\u0101, remaining in contemplation, practicing esoteric disciplines with countless \u1e0d\u0101kin\u012bs, and giving them teachings. There he transmitted Dzogpa Chenpo teachings to Shr\u012bsi\u1e43ha.<\/p>\n

At the end of his life, amid wondrous signs, sounds, rays, and lights, he dissolved into the radiant body. Because of the devotional prayers of Shr\u012bsi\u1e43ha, the testament of Ma\u00f1jushr\u012bmitra, Gom-nyam Trukpa (The Six Experiences of Meditation) descended into the hands of Shr\u012bsi\u1e43ha. It includes these lines:<\/p>\n

O son of good family! If you wish to see the continuity of the naked absolute awareness,<\/p>\n

[a] seek the object of awareness [clear sky]<\/p>\n

[b] press the points of the body [by posture],<\/p>\n

[c] close the way of going and coming [breathing],<\/p>\n

[d] focus on the target [ultimate sphere],<\/p>\n

[e] rely on the unmoving [of body, eyes, and awareness], and<\/p>\n

[f] hold the vast space [the nature of awareness itself].<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Masters Shr\u012bsi\u1e43ha and Buddhaj\u00f1\u0101na are the disciples of Ma\u00f1jushr\u012bmitra and some even think that they may be the same person.<\/p>\n

Later on, Ma\u00f1jushr\u012bmitra was reborn by lotus birth at a place called Serkyi Metok Ki Gyenpe Ling (Island Arrayed with Golden Flowers) in western India and became known as \u201cthe later Ma\u00f1jushr\u012bmitra.\u201d He gave the teachings of Dzogpa Chenpo to Guru Padmasambhava and master \u0100ryadeva.<\/p>\n
